BBC Academy, BBC Wales, Tramshed Tech, The Space and Google Digital Garage are proud to be delivering the first Digital Cities Cardiff Week – a free and exciting week of events for Wales’ creative community. Digital Cities Cardiff offers an exciting week of bespoke events for Wales’ creative industries. From practical hands-on workshops to masterclasses, digital surgeries and exclusive keynotes – join us for a week of inspiration, imagination and creative collaboration in the digital space.

Delivered by the BBC, Tramshed Tech, The Space and The Digital Garage @ Google, this is the latest in digital creativity and technological trends taking place at media and event space The Tramshed.

Running from 13 – 17 March, the week comprises of:

·         Three themed and specially tailored days for the TV Production, Arts and Music industries

·         5@5: Keynote speakers, inspiring topics and easy networking at 5pm each day

·         The Digital Garage @ Google: Boost your digital knowledge with free courses and one-to-one mentoring opportunities.


Here’s what you can get up to @ Digital Cities Week Cardiff…

We’ll be holding 5@5 panel sessions which will take part throughout the full week at 5pm to hear about the latest in Creative Clustering with KTN, Digital Education, Digital Learning and Emerging Digital Classroom, Digital Commissioning at the BBC, Live-to-digital music and arts performance and Peter Jenner: Music copyright in the digital age.

The common thread across all 5@5 sessions is to investigate new business models and how to finance digital content in the creative industries…

About Carrie Wootten

Carrie has worked across the creative digital and education sectors for the last 20 years and is currently one of the team leading the KTN’s work around immersive technology.

Immerse UK was set up at the end of 2016 to help drive productivity and economic growth. It already has over 500 members spanning all sectors of the economy, with large corporates, SMEs, individuals and the academic base all represented.

The aim of the network is to help UK businesses take advantage of these new opportunities, by identifying demand, making connections, facilitating collaboration and tapping into new areas of growth.

About Louise Harris 

Louise has worked in the Education and Digital sectors for over 15 years, with a well-established reputation as an expert working across the two fields.

As a secondary school teacher/head of department previously, Louise brings expert knowledge of the various curriculums around the UK/Rest of the World and detailed knowledge of the Digital sector and its impact on education.

She is a Microsoft MIE Expert Educator, Microsoft MIE. UNESCO Digital competency trained, wth extensive Project Management and Leadership training experience.

About Mark John

Marks experience and knowledge includes over 30 years working in the creative industries across genres and platforms both for the BBC & independent sector. He’s also held creative industry consultancy and advisory posts for skills, training and public sector clients, including Cardiff Council, Creative Skills and TAC.

Mark has enjoyed working across sectors nationally and internationally in production, financial and project management and delivering leadership training in both business and education.

About Janet Hayward

Janet Hayward hails from Pontlliw, near Swansea, and was educated at Penyrheol Comprehensive School, Gorseinon and at Cardiff University, graduating with a BSc Joint Honours degree in Computer Science and Psychology, followed by a PGCE in Primary Education.

Janet began her teaching career on the Longleat Estate in Wiltshire in 1990 and is now headteacher at Cadoxton Primary School, Barry. The school is a Regional Training Centre for Apple  and also shares a Lego Innovation Studio. The school has gained the Naace 3rd Millennium Learning and Community Impact Award as well as the TES Outstanding ICT Partnership Award.

In 2011, Janet chaired the Digital Classroom Task and Finish Group and has chaired the National Digital Learning Council since its inception in September 2012. In 2013, Janet co-chaired a report into the future of Computer Science in Wales.

In June 2014 she was awarded an OBE for Services to Education and in 2015 was shortlisted in the Varkey Global Education Top 50 Teachers.

About Iain Tweedale

Iain recently joined Tramshed Tech to focus on his passion for the digital transformation of the creative industries and education.

Prior to the Tramshed, Iain was head of the BBC’s Online team in Wales producing daily rolling content for bbc.co.uk, the iPlayer and social media, through to big drama brands such as Doctor Who and Sherlock. The BBC Wales Innovation team is also a centre of expertise for binaural audio and VR production, working with the music industry, TV drama and factual content.

Before the BBC he was head of IBM’s ISP consulting team in Europe, Middle East and Africa, working with broadcasters and telecoms companies.  He has also worked as business development director of a Finnish multinational and as managing director of a telecoms company in Russia.

WEDNESDAY 15TH MARCH 2017: BBC DIGITAL SKILLS DAY

Get access to practical training and expert advice from the BBC practitioners at the forefront of digital production and get hands on with the latest digital technology. From filming on your smartphone to storytelling online, this carefully selected range of masterclasses and free training is suitable for both experienced professionals wanting to brush up on their digital skills and new entrants to the business.

09:30 Keynote: Digital Trends with Nic Newman, Reuters Institute and former BBC News Website Founder and World News Editor explores how technology is changing the way we tell stories and the very latest trends.

10:30 OMG: The Secrets of Social Storytelling with Rowan Kerek Robertson former head of social media for BBC Television dives into what it is that makes content on social media shareable and explores different ways to connect with your audience via social media.

12.15 **Extra session added by popular demand** Make Immersive Content on Your Smartphone with Mark Robertson, a Journalism Trainer from the BBC Academy on what to do when you arrive on the scene of a story with just your phone, and the must-have apps to go with it.

14:00 An introduction to Digital Innovation at the BBC with Robin Moore, Head of Innovation and Connected Studio, BBC Wales introduces this session, exploring how and why the BBC pioneers in Digital Innovation, introducing short talks on a selection of innovative pilots and the lessons learnt.

15:15 Make Immersive Content on Your Smartphone with Mark Robertson, a Journalism Trainer from the BBC Academy on what to do when you arrive on the scene of a story with just your phone, and the must-have apps to go with it.

About Jo Pearce

As Creative Director Jo sets the Digital Drama Strategy for some of the UK’s most successful brands such as Sherlock and Doctor Who. As well as leading a multi skilled digital team she is the Executive Producer for drama related short form video across BBC Public Service brands. Jo recently took up a new role as Digital Commissioner for BBC Wales leading on her passion for telling stories in new ways and is currently leading 360 creative and live global interactive productions across social platforms.

Tramshed Tech, BBC Academy and The Space present a day of insight and workshops tailored especially for those working in arts and cultural organisations throughout Wales and beyond. From digital storytelling, to photography, digital trends and growing online audiences – these sessions are about making a big impact with your art and enhancing your understanding of and access to the digital arts opportunities on offer.

Morning session with BBC Academy and Tramshed Tech

10:00 Digital Storytelling with Patrick Flavelle, BBC Academy Series Producer. From VR and AR to mobile technology, Patrick explores how digital platforms have transformed traditional storytelling and shares tips on how to engage with new audiences and enhance interactivity in your own productions and arts projects.

11:45 The Power of the Image with David Drake, Director of Ffotogallery and the Diffusion Festival: With platforms such as Instagram and Flickr, the power of the image to tell stories, spark political debate and to reach audiences has never been greater. David Drake will lead a live and networked discussion on Google Hangouts on the power of the image in the digital world.

Lunch and afternoon session with The Space: 13:00-16:00

The team from The Space, the commissioning and development organisation founded by the BBC and Arts Council England, share their insights and practical tips on how to navigate the digital space and grow your online audiences.

•Digital Trends with Katherine Jewkes. Want to know which trends to look out for and how you can make the most of them in your work? Senior Digital Producer at Manchester International Festival and The Space, Katherine Jewkes, lifts the lid on emerging trends and why they are relevant for arts organisations

•Digital Strategy: A Practical Guide. Building a digital plan which can help you achieve your goals can sometimes seem daunting. This quick and practical session breaks down what we mean by ‘digital’ and provides advice on how to get started or build on where you are now.

•Online Audience Development. Keen to make the most of the audience opportunity online but don’t know where to start? From identifying where to find online audiences, to quick wins on social media and new distribution opportunities, The Space Head of Audiences and Distribution Owen Hughes offers tips to help grow and build relationships with your audience.
